Our Story
The villagers in Sermathang, Helambu felt the need for their children to learn basic English and Nepali in the 80s -so that they could work as trekking guides when they grew up. Thus, a learning center was started in 1987 with seven small children. By 1989 there were thirty-five students, and the villagers felt the need to register the learning center as a school so that their children could continue to high school. Thus, Yangrima School was established by a Sermathang resident Gopal Lama, on the 5th of June 1989.
The purpose of Yangrima School is to provide an inclusive and practical education with respect to the local knowledge, languages, values and traditional practices. We believe that a child growing up in her own community, learning both the national curriculum as well as her mother tongue, local skills and rooted in her traditions will help with her holistic development. We know that a growing child needs parental care, community protection and access to modern knowledge, skills and technology to help her develop her full potential. Fortunately, we have experienced this through teaching and nurturing hundreds of students in Helambu over the last three decades.
Yangrima School has been a victim of the Maoist Civil War, the Great Earthquake in 2015 and recently the Covid-19 pandemic. These incidents have forced us to think more clearly about how we as a small independent school can help children in these remote and rural villages more effectively. It has made us re-evaluate how we can remain committed to our mission of ensuring that no child is left behind in our region.
Our Vision
Yangrima Boarding School envisions a future where every child has the opportunity to develop their full potential. We strive to cultivate responsible and capable leaders grounded in integrity and rooted in their cultural heritage, who are ready to navigate global opportunities.
